Stoane Lighting achieves highest B Corp score in industry
Sustainable luminaire pioneer Stoane Lighting has achieved the highest B Corp score in the UK lighting industry.
The company recertified with the independent environmental certification body and was awarded a rating of 119.7, some 19 points ahead of the next industry rival, Spark and Bell.
Among sustainability professionals, B Corp is considered the gold standard of environmental certifications. It’s not easy to achieve: a business has to demonstrate high levels of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.
The B Corp assessors look at diverse factors including raw materials, supply chain practices, employee benefits and charitable giving. Not only that, to achieve B Corp certification, a company must legally change their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all with an involvement in the business, including employees, suppliers and customers.
Applicants must attain a minimum score in the challenging B Impact Assessment of 80 or above and then pass a risk review. A typical business achieves a score of 50.9.
Despite those high barriers, 10 lighting brands are B Corp members. These are Stoane Lighting, Spark & Bell, Shoplight, Trainspotters, Tala, House Of, White Light, Skinflint, Phos and Anglepoise.
Stoane Lighting has led in sustainability in recent years. Its ZTA luminaire was the first light fitting to achieve a TM66 rating in the excellent category.
The spotlight – which scored 2.6, taking it over the 2.5 threshold for the top ranking – was designed specifically for the circular economy and realises true circular manufacture in practice.
The ZTA can be disassembled, repaired and rebuilt many times over using every day accessible tools.
In 2021 it was the first product to win both a platinum and a green rating in the Build Back Better Awards.
The company has a ReNew service, focusing on repair or upgrade requirements, which is supported by a five year warranty and further 20 year duty of care.
