ICER Net Zero specification launched

ICER Net Zero specification launched

The Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling (ICER) has issued a detailed specification designed to help WEEE recyclers and schemes decarbonise their operations.

The specification has been developed over three years by a working group of around 12 people, drawn from WEEE processors, WEEE transport operators, and producer compliance schemes. It includes 26 criteria covering company policies, logistics and treatment operations, and offices.
Each criterion has four levels of achievement –

    1. beginning,
    2. improving,
    3. advancing,
    4. and excelling.

Collectively, the criteria provide a way in which WEEE operators can self-assess the steps they are taking to decarbonise their operations and help to pinpoint changes they can make.

Commenting the news, ICER Director Claire Snow said

“It has been really encouraging to see the WEEE industry come together to prepare this specification. It has been through a robust review and validation process and is ready for use. We are now inviting WEEE schemes and recyclers to indicate if they are likely to use the system the industry has developed. That will then be used as the basis for setting up third party oversight of the self-assessment process.”

One of the working group members, Jane Richardson, Head of ESG and Sustainability at Waste Experts added

“The specification has been designed to accommodate companies that are well on the path to net zero, as well as those that are just starting out. It has also been through an extensive process of review and consultation. We hope that means that as many companies as possible will be able to use the system.”

And another working group member, Nigel Harvey, CEO of Recolight said

“We can see the effects of global heating all around us. This specification will help all in the industry to play their part in tackling the climate crisis, by converting aspiration into tangible action.”

The specification is designed to allow users to undertake a self-assessment of the steps they have taken to reduce carbon emissions. Once this has happened, a third-party auditor will undertake a review of the documentary evidence used to support the self-assessed scoring, to ensure that scoring is consistent.
