Tala becomes a B Corp
London-based lighting brand Tala has become a B Corporation.
The company – known for its distinctive oversized lamps – scored 89.7 in its first B Impact assessment, exceeding the industry certified average of 87.1 and becoming only the sixth UK-based lighting company to join the non-profit network.
The company has also funded the planting of over 130,000 trees internationally as part of its ‘impact projects’. The reforestation projects so far include The Heart of England in the UK (2016-18), The National Forest Foundation USA (2018), WeForest India (2018) and most recently a mangrove project with Eden Reforestation Madagascar (2021-22).
Tala has a dedicated in-house supply chain team who work closely with its vendor base and testing laboratories to track environmental responsibility in its inputs.
The company has a tracking system in place for sea and air shipments globally saying ‘measurement is the first step in our journey to reduce impacts’. Tala is now carbon neutral on all inbound shipments and has reduced air freight from 10 per cent in the 2020 financial year to 1.4 per cent in 2021.
Tala is a member of the Lighting Industry Association UK. As part of its Quality Assurance programme, Tala is recognised as an LIAQA Assured Company. Tala runs an ongoing environmental and social audit program across our supply chain partners.
All of Tala’s packaging is now plastic free.The company estimates that switching to recyclable packaging materials will save approximately 8,000 kilograms of single-use plastic over the course of a year, the equivalent weight of an average lorry .
Tala says it aims to be carbon zero by 2025.
Other B Corps in the lighting industry include Skinflint Lighting, Phos Lighting, Stoane Lighting, White Light and Urban Volt.
There are currently over 6200 B Corps in 161 industries and 89 countries across the globe.
