Trilux upgrades 400 luminaires from fluorescent to LED in City of London

One London Wall

Luminaire maker Trilux has adopted the reuse model of lighting circularity by retrofitting over 400 fluorescent office lights with LEDs to increase efficiency and reduce material waste.

The upgrade took place at One London Wall, a prominent curved landmark designed by Foster & Partners with 2,500 square metres of Grade A office accommodation on two floors.

Trilux worked with design and build specialists Epiphany on the sustainable approach to the lighting on the principle that products that do not generate waste and do not themselves become waste are ideal for a circular economy.

The Trilux design team worked collaboratively with Epiphany to determine the best solution to improve lighting efficiency and reuse as much material as possible.

It was possible to reuse the existing luminaire and redesign it with LEDs and a new gear tray retaining the main body and other usable parts – an example of circular principles at play.

Circular lighting principles have helped the office building cut its lighting energy costs by 47 per cent and reduce its carbon footprint by 6.6 million tonnes of CO2.

Reusing the existing luminaires has saved 1.3 tonnes of new material being created, reducing material waste, and preserving virgin material resources.

Epiphany director Darren Furlong told the Circular Lighting Report: ‘There’s only one way to deliver consistently exceptional results, and that’s by working with tried and tested tradespeople. So, we make sure to treat our suppliers as we do our employees.

‘In return, we get a loyal team of craftspeople who go the extra mile on every project. This is always the case when working with the team at Trilux. In this case they pulled out all the stops helping the client to achieve greater energy efficiency, in the most sustainable and cost-effective way.’

• Remanufacturing Lighting is the subject of a special one-day conference organised by Recolight and taking place on Thursday 27 April 2023 at the Coin Street Conference Centre in London. This CPD-approved event will give you the tools, insights and contacts make a success of luminaire reconditioning and reuse. You’ll learn how to sell the concept of reconditioned lights, develop best practice policies, comply with the standards, set up a testing regime for reused luminaires and remanufacture fittings at scale. The gathering will also give you inspiration from real world projects which prove that remanufacturing can be a success everyone. You’ll also meet key players in the remanufacturing industry  network with specifiers with the power to get your products into projects. See more HERE.
