Trilux upgrades 400 luminaires from fluorescent to LED in City of London
Luminaire maker Trilux has adopted the reuse model of lighting circularity by retrofitting over 400 fluorescent office lights with LEDs to increase efficiency and reduce material waste.
The upgrade took place at One London Wall, a prominent curved landmark designed by Foster & Partners with 2,500 square metres of Grade A office accommodation on two floors.
Trilux worked with design and build specialists Epiphany on the sustainable approach to the lighting on the principle that products that do not generate waste and do not themselves become waste are ideal for a circular economy.
The Trilux design team worked collaboratively with Epiphany to determine the best solution to improve lighting efficiency and reuse as much material as possible.
It was possible to reuse the existing luminaire and redesign it with LEDs and a new gear tray retaining the main body and other usable parts – an example of circular principles at play.
Circular lighting principles have helped the office building cut its lighting energy costs by 47 per cent and reduce its carbon footprint by 6.6 million tonnes of CO2.
Reusing the existing luminaires has saved 1.3 tonnes of new material being created, reducing material waste, and preserving virgin material resources.
