Five steps to help you manage your WEEE: from storing lamps through to the paper work
WEEE doesn’t have to be complex, Recolight are here to help – consider us as your compliance department. Recolight have been operating for over 10 years. With you, we’ve managed the recycling of over 300 million lamps, that’s enough to fill ten Albert Halls. We do get WEEE.
WEEE is Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – it can harm the environment if not treated properly.
The WEEE regulations are in place to keep electrical products out of landfill.
Here are a few tips to help you and links to Recolight guides.
Step one – storing your waste lamps
Lamps are fragile – they need to be treated with the care you’d use for your most prized possessions. Where possible , use a separate container for those heavy cumbersome sodium and HID lamps. And use another container for your fluorescent tubes.
Place your lamps in so so carefully, we don’t want broken lamps. You could also be at risk to mercury, and we don’t want that!
Step two – what you should put in your lamp container
Well, your containers are just for lamps. All WEEE lamps. LED compacts and tubes, all fluorescent, sodium, metal halides. They’re not for all the packaging though.
Handy tip: put your cardboard recycling bin next to the lamp container.
Sadly we have to send you a bill if your container has other stuff in it. We want to keep your service free.
Step three – the WEEE paper work and why it’s important
The paper work is there for the Government to keep tabs on how much we’re all recycling. And also to monitor the movement of the hazardous waste stream.
But fret not, we’ve made it easy for you. We guide you through and tell you all that’s needed to stay compliant. And with Recolight consignment notes are free.
Step four – getting the WEEE paper work right for each UK country
We have four environment agencies across the UK. The EA, SEPA, NIEA and NRW. The paper work varies slightly for each, not greatly as it’s all there for the same purpose.
You’ll find all the links in our managing the paperwork section.
Step five – more than lamps
Did you know that Recolight also recycle other WEEE too. Our lamp serve is free, we can recycle other electrical items at a very competitive cost. We can do this because we’re a non-profit organisation. We’re not making profit for shareholders.
But please remind yourself of Step One and storing. Don’t mix your electricals with your lamps. We’ve got containers for you. Or, to cut your costs, you can store on an ordinary pallet and add a bit of shrink wrap to keep it all secure.
