Household luminaire producers – get ready for WEEE compliance
From the beginning of January 2019, household luminaires come into scope of the UK’s WEEE regulations. That means manufacturers, importers, and own branders of domestic light fittings will need to take various steps to comply.
That includes putting the crossed wheelie bin symbol on the product or packaging, and joining a WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme (PCS), such as Recolight. Other obligations include recording and reporting to the PCS the weight of product sold each quarter, and then financing their share of the recycling of waste electrical items.
The 2019 change means that household luminaires need to comply with the same requirements that other sectors of the electrical industry have met since 2007. Making early contact with a PCS will ensure that companies are prepared.
