Free of charge recycling of waste lamps
A higher Government lamp WEEE target for 2016 means most Waste Management and Facilities Management companies should be able to access free waste lamp recycling.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations require Producers to fund the recycling of waste electricals – including fluorescent lamps. At the end of March, the Government announced that the 2016 UK lamp recycling target, to be funded by Producer Compliance Schemes (PCSs), is 6882 tonnes. That is much higher than the 2015 target which was 2680 tonnes.
The 2016 target is close to the total tonnage of waste lamps that the Government forecast will be collected and recycled in the UK this year.
This means that during 2016, WEEE PCSs should obtain certificates of recycling (evidence notes) adding up to 6882 tonnes, as a way of complying with the WEEE regulations. They can obtain these either by arranging for lamp recycling themselves, or by purchasing them from other PCSs or recyclers.
As a consequence, virtually all companies which collect and aggregate waste lamps should be able to get their lamps recycled for free – good news for Waste Management Companies and Facilities Managers which collect waste lamps.
