US firm unveils sustainable luminaire made from wood

American lighting manufacturer Lightly has followed up its acclaimed Butterfly luminaire with another ultra carbon conscious light, the Glow Direct.

This suspended fixture is made primarily from wood and wool.

Its housing and end caps contain no metal, plastic, or glass and are instead made from sustainably-harvested Pennsylvania poplar trees.

Its gaskets are 100 per cent natural wool felt while the wood adhesive is non-toxic and the wood stain is VoC-free.

Lightly says the lightweight wood and wool construction also reduces the embodied carbon and cost of shipping as compared to traditional metal fixtures.

Available in 3000K, 3500K, 4000K with CRI>90. Also available in tuneable white, ranging from 2700-6500K with CRI of 90.

The Glow Direct also challenges traditional luminaire design, typically reliant on translucent diffusers to distribute light. Instead, it delivers a 100 per cent direct distribution with a distinctive glowing arch optical profile finished in highly reflective matte white eco-friendly paint.

The LED engines are concealed from viewing from all sides, reducing glare and creating a comfortable lighting experience.

The luminaire features a remote drivers and Declare and EPD certificates are available.

Lightly says its products are designed to stand the test of time, then be recycled, repurposed, or biodegraded at end of life. To ensure longevity, all its products must pass rigorous testing in environmental chambers evaluating the potential for warping and humidity absorption.

The Glow Direct is a follow up to the acclaimed Butterfly fixture, which was hailed at the time as the world’s first commercial LED luminaire with a fixture housing that is free of metal, plastic and glass, according to the company.

The material in the Butterfly luminaire is 95 per cent biodegradable, 3 per cent recyclable and a mere 2 per cent goes to landfill.

Butterfly delivers an 80 per cent indirect / 20 per cent direct distribution with a distinctive open-web optical profile finished in highly reflective matte white eco-friendly paint.
