‘Consider impact of big shows’, says LUG

A busy exhibition. LUG Lighting says we need to reconsider.

Polish luminaire maker LUG is calling on the industry to rethink the practice of large-scale exhibitions ‘given the need to drive down pressure on the environment’.

With Light + Building 2024 drawn to a close, the manufacturer says it made a conscious decision not to attend the biennial event as ‘participating would have incurred a significant carbon footprint from travel and logistic emissions’.

In a statement, the firm said: ‘As a manufacturer with a clear focus on sustainable LED lighting, LUG has concerns that large-scale events that require air and car travel, alongside high energy usage for lighting and heating and catering facilities are a step back in the gains the lighting sector has made towards a greener future, and also the personal gains LUG have made as a company.

‘LUG is dedicated to crafting lighting solutions that not only meet the highest standards of performance but also adhere to stringent sustainability criteria. By integrating energy-efficient technologies, eco-friendly materials, and responsible manufacturing processes, LUG strives to mitigate the adverse effects of lighting on the environment.’

The brand says its commitment to sustainability extends to incorporating responsible practices in packaging, recycling, and water use. It recognises the environmental impact of packaging materials so it meticulously designs its wrapping and boxing to be eco-friendly. This prioritises recyclability and minimises waste.

LUG continues this ethos throughout the business by thinking through the operations of the business, and where possible, reducing its global footprint. Opting not to attend the recent Light + Building event is just one example of its commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

UK country manager Darrell West told the Circular Lighting Report: ‘We know it is not easy to feel that a company is missing out on opportunities to engage with peers, network and generally enjoy the lighting community.

‘Yet LUG couldn’t justify the impact on the environment of travelling to Light + Building when our focus is on being the most sustainable company we can be. While there are many benefits of coming together as a sector, the advancement of online exhibitions and events should be leveraged much more to reduce ecological pressures.’
