‘Beast’ of a chandelier is upgraded with LED

A huge chandelier was among the period lights remanufactured at a classical building in central London.

Eulum Design converted a range period fixtures and supplied wireless controls at the neoclassical-style Victoria House building in Bloomsbury. Located on Bloomsbury Square Garden in the centre of London, the Grade II building is home to a co-working space. The client, LABS, wanted sophisticated, calm and warm design which would evoke a sense of timelessness and promote relaxation.

‘It was a very difficult product because structurally the engineers didn’t know how it went together or how it was mounted and nobody wanted to take responsibility for removing it from the ceiling and being able to put it back up again,’ says Marcus Worthington, founder of Eulum Design.  ‘So we ended up actually refitting it in situ on platforms and designing it and cleaning it whilst it was still installed.

‘So we went and measured up, and then created a whole new lighting solution to evenly light all the glass panels.

‘We fabricated that off site and returned to install each section bit by bit, working ourselves 360 degrees around the chandelier.

‘And every LED that we put in there was custom made for it. All the shapes, all the forms. And we ended up making a sort of inverted pyramid inside so that the light pattern on all the glass was evenly distributed.’

Earlier this year, Eulum upgraded over 90 Erco spotlights from halogen to LED at Heatherwick Studio in London. The Erco fittings were in the showroom on the second floor of the building. They have housings of powder-coated cast aluminum and are mounted on three-circuit track. They originally had single-ended metal halide lamps.

It also ecently reconditioned and reconfigured a 3.3m television prop of a quantum computer, turning it into a dramatic signature pendants fitting for mathematician and television presenter Hannah Fry.
