Low-waste light gets ‘excellent’ TM66 rating
A luminaire designed to minimise waste has got an ‘excellent’ rating in the circularity metric TM66.
Thorlux Lighting’s SkyCore family of luminaires achieved a score of 2.5 in Cibse’s TM66 Circular Economy Assessment Method (CEAM).
During the development of the SkyCore range, Thorlux engineers were tasked with dramatically reducing waste during manufacture. Through careful selection of steel sheet size and optimising the component layout, two luminaires are manufactured from a single sheet, utilising over 80 per cent of the metal.
The waste material from the centre of the luminaire frame is used to manufacture the accompanying gearbox.
The steel used in the SkyCore family is made with at least 27 per cent recycled content.
Thorlux has also minimised the variance of materials used, making disassembly and recycling easier when the luminaires reach the end of their working life.
SkyCore is a family of indoor luminaires which include the SkyGlo, SkyPro and SkyDome.
The series is designed for low glare compliance in offices or to light stimulating environments like school classrooms.
The SkyCore family has an efficacy of up to 146.9 luminaire lumens per circuit watt minimising power consumption and impact on the environment.
SkyCore luminaires are designed to provide a 100,000 hour life and are fully serviceable, says the firm.
Through its modular design, SkyCore luminaire components can be separated for servicing, upgrading or repurposing.
Available in recessed, surface and pendant mounting, the SkyCore family is aimed for a wide range of applications.
There are three diffuser options, three mounting options and four different wattages.
The wattage of each SkyCore luminaire can be adjusted on-site through the ‘wattage selector’ mounted on the gear box.
The wattage selector can be set to one of four pre-determined wattages. The feature allows the luminaire to be adjusted to room requirements, such as increasing or decreasing light levels after a change in use or occupier.
