Remanufactured bulkheads go on sale
Remanufactured bulkheads with a range of commercial and environmental benefits are currently being marketed by Scottish firm EGG Lighting.
The pre-used luminaires – which have been upgraded from fluorescent to LED – have been assessed for their circularity under Cibse’s TM66 metric and have achieved an ‘excellent’ rating of 2.6.
EGG says that they are 40 per cent cheaper than buying a new equivalent and boast an 80 per cent reduction in energy use compared to the original fluorescent fittings.
The carbon footprint of the lights are 20 kgCO2e less than a new product and over 1kg of material is reused per unit.
EGG Lighting was one of the first companies in the UK to offer remanfuctured luminaires and in 2021 it was recognised in the Build Back Better Awards with a Gold and Green Award.
EGG Lighting’s remanufacturing is a process guided by the British Standard for remanufacture and is conducted in-line with UK lighting industry and legal requirements. Its approach joins together waste management, engineering, documentation, testing and manufacture to maximise the value of otherwise waste lighting equipment. It gives customers as-new warranties.
The bulkheads were assessed under the Circular Economy Assessment Method – Make of the Cibse TM66 tool, where it scored 93 points out of a possible 134 maximum for product design, 31.3 points out a possible 46.5 points for manufacturing, 11 points out of a possible 24 points for materials and 35 points out of a possible maximum of 43 for ecosystem. Its overall performance was 170.3 points out of a possible maximum of 247.5 points, taking it comfortably in the ‘excellent’ zone with a score of 2.6. ‘Excellent’ circularity is defined as a score between 2.5 and 4.0.
