Holophane flagship luminaire achieves ‘excellent’ circularity
Holophane Europe’s flagship street lighting luminaire, the V-Max, has achieved an ‘excellent’ score in a TM66 assessment for its compatibility with the circular economy.
The new version of the V-Max was assessed under the Lighting Industry Association’s Circular Economy Assured Scheme and confirmed at the TM66 CEAM rating of 2.8 ‘Excellent’.
Cibse’s TM66 allows manufacturers to rate their products and follow a method to design out waste, maximise value and improve maintenance, so that luminaires can be repaired, recycled, and re-used.
‘Anything that helps drive greater awareness of the environmental benefits associated with a circular economy approach is a positive step forward,’ Holophane managing director David Barnwell told the Circular Lighting Report. ‘The TM66 Assured Product Conformity Scheme allows participating manufacturers to showcase their sustainability efforts, providing clear differentiation from unsubstantiated greenwashing.’
Holophane’s ambitious sustainability initiative, EarthLIGHT, sets the company on a path towards a more sustainable environment, carbon neutral operations and the circular economy. It also addresses corporate governance and social issues.
Holophane has taken the strategic decision to ‘on-shore’ its production and supply chain to the UK and EU supply partners.
One immediate benefit, says the firm, is a reductions in transportation time, reliability, and costs.
Luminaires are now completely assembled at its factory in Milton Keynes and over 95 per cent of components are sourced from the UK or EU.
As well as reducing its environmental impact, having luminaires designed, compliance tested, tooled and manufactured in UK helps to eliminate supply chain issues caused by Brexit, Covid and the conflict in Ukraine.
EarthLIGHT also describes Holophane’s journey and roadmap to net zero. In 2021, Holophane moved to purchasing all its electricity from renewable sources and it has installed solar PV roof panels which are expected to provide 70 per cent of electricity requirements this year.
